Been feeling under the weather lately. Stressed or dunno what.. I can't exactly pinpoint out. Not sleeping well and Amber's nightmares ain't helping either. I engaged a helper and things around the home have to change. Schedule need to be in placed, fridge needs to be stocked up, food labelled and house rules set in place.
I don't embrace change easily. In fact I hate changes especially nail biting ones, like engaging a new helper, changes in Amber's schedule or changes at work. It stressess me out !!!!
I had sleepless nights and the worst was after a few rounds of coffee from a nights out with friends. I stayed up till 3am .. typing out helpers schedule, dos and don'ts and house rules. Having made mistakes with my Cambodian maid before, this time I wanna set things right.
Sleepless nights + stress from re-organizing the household = Anxious Me !
My body was weak, vision blurred, mind blur and part of my face was numb. Hubs was worried about hypertension and quickly got my blood pressure checked from the home bp monitor.
Turns out.. I'm not hyper but have hypotension
and I googled.. classic symptoms of low blood pressure include :
Changes in mental status (difficulty concentrating, confusion) or a sense of "impending doom" or anxiety
...ooopps....
gotta boil some red date water and nourishing soup tonight.
and that is me.. being my own Medicine Man.

MMRV Vaccination
We took Amber for booster vaccination last Saturday. She was scheduled for Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) booster shot and Chicken Pox (Varilrix) the following month.
We're lucky coz now, a new vacinnation, MMRV - combining both MMR & Varilrix is out and that save Amber's butt from an extra jab. 4 in 1, they call it. My nephew just caught a very bad case of chicken pox and I wanted to get her fully immunized asap.
Her growth measurements at 4year 1 month :
height - 103.6cm
weight - 15kg
head circumference - 51cm
Dr Iean measured her growth charts and she's average for her height and below average for weight, at the lower 25% percentile.
Amber has always been a big baby and her allergy problems has pulled her weight down significantly. In fact she only gained 1kg from her last measurement on March 2009, at 2yr 11 months - weight : 14kg and height : 98.2cm
Dr Iean commented she looks skinny now and asked about her diet. I told doctor about her allergy treatment and he is skeptical of giving Amber the jab since she's allergic to eggs. The MMRV vaccination is not recommended for children allergic to eggs. We discussed and thought about it for a while and since she did not have any major allergic reaction from the first jab, she should be to take the booster shot.
I know the booster shot will not be easy and Amber is bound to have some allergic reaction, to what extent, I am not sure but I gather it should not be life threatening. Dr Wong, Amber's allergy doctor warned me, while Amber is under his treatment, not to expose her to eggs or else she will have a flare up, worst than before. Anyway, I made my own judgement, went ahead with the booster shot for chicken pox. I'd think not vaccinating her will pose a bigger risk of a full bloan attack.
As usual, she wailed like a baby, a baby you want to carry, hold and sooth but she quiet down immediately when the stuck a plaster on her. She likes plasters :)
I could see her sniffing almost immediately and then coughing. Gooey green goo running down her nose and mild temparature at night. We fed her lots of liquids, strawberries and porridge. After 2 days, she's ok.
Now, my next concern if I should get her vaccinated against H1N1, also not recommended for anyone allergic to eggs. I'll have to wait for our next visit to Tangkak and check with Dr Wong.

Giant Avocados
Look at these giant avocados. It's 1.5 times bigger than the Australian variety.

MIL has a friend whose husband works in Sabah and brought back an avocado plant from Sabah. The wife successfully planted the avocado at her backyard in Tampin and it's fruiting heaps. We are the lucky beneficiary of the bountiful harvest.
I love avocados but Amber hates it. I tried all methods to coax her to eat, with honey, blended or mixed with other fruits but she absolutely hates it. She'll make the 'I wanna puke' look whenever I force a slice to her. I know I'm bad to force her food but if you daugther is underweight, you'd do the same too. :D
Hubs won't touch it either, unfortunately. I can't possibly eat all the avocados and I have frozen some of the fruits. I plan to cook curry chicken with it. I think since the fruit is so creamy, it'll make a good substitute to santan. Oh, I also made coffee with pureed avocado. Tastes good, thick and creamy. A friend gave me this idea many years back.

The fruit, sliced up.

Avocado is a complete food and you can read more here.
It's really a surprise that such great fruit can be grown in our backyard. Perhaps someone should farm it in a bigger scale and we don't have to pay so much for imported avocados.

Amber's Getting Better
We took her to the doctors to check her lungs last Saturday. Her lungs are cleared but cough persists.
I take extra precautions to keep her body warm, especially at night. No more evening baths, just wash hands, legs, bum bum, brush teeth and wipe face. I apply body warming oil to her abdomen, wear a camisole inside her jammies and put on Vicks to her feet sole and lastly put on socks.
I find Vicks helps when kids have runny nose. Apply plenty to their feet, right up to ankles and put on long socks. Kids will sleep better throughout the night.
However, the ever mischievious Amber plays the socks and I have to search for them in darkness after she sleeps and wear it over her feet again .. every night .

She wears the socks over her hands as gloves ....

Prevention or Precaution
Prevention or precaution ? Whatever. Chinese medicine halls now sells prepacked 'leung char' and with special ones labeled H1N1, for one to take precautions against H1N1 but the guy also said it can prevent H1N1 wor ...
I don't believe much of his words, purely sales talk but still I end up grabbing some packs of :

I took a few packets of 'leung char' and some to 'yoon fai' or sooth the lungs. I don't think it prevents me or my family from catching the H1N1 virus. I believe in keeping ourselves clean and be wary of our surrounding wherever we go. Never leave home without antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizers. However, I do believe the 'leung char' keeps our body balanced, cool and thus reduce our chances of catching a cough, fever or sore throat. If we keep our immunity high, there'll be less chance of us catching the virus right ?
Moreover, the 'leung char' taste great and refreshing !

Her Health & Hygiene
The paeds was checking Amber's records today.
Our last visit was 14 Aug 08. My girl has fared very well the past one year. We've kept her healthy and clean and the childminder did a good job too, if not for the HFMD. Month and month again, I kept reminding myself she has not fallen sick enough to visit the paeds and keeping my fingers and toes crossed.
When she was 15-28 months, she needed to see the paed nearly every month !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 39 months :
Height : 103cm
Weight : 15.5kg
Then she asked doctor to check her ears.
Ears : Very clean. Doc commented on her extremely clean ear canals coz Mama is one crazy ear cleaning freak and Amber cooperates so willingly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Believe it or not, both of us enjoys ear cleaning time. She'll bring me a torchlight and lie on the bed, head on the side while I dig for gold. Sometimes fruitful, sometimes nothing. We bond together cleaning her ears. She'll go 'yay' when I call to clean her ears. Many a times, she'll giggle and laugh when the cottonbuds tickle her ear canal, then I'll smack her bum and shout 'Don't Move!!" , then we'll both laugh out loud.
Other than feed poor feeding and diet, she's cooperative in her own hygiene.
She goes to the toilet on her own.
If she pees, she wipes, flush and wash her hands
If she poos, she'll call for help, she'll ask me to peg my nose coz it's smelly ..
She willingly lets me brush her teeth.
I think she's too young to brush her own
She's learning to bath on her own for the fun of it.
Yesterday I screamed the house down. I turn my back to fetch her clothes, she used a sponge and Cosway cream cleanser to clean herself. I left it at the bathtub as a reminder to ask maid to scrub stains.
She's obsessed with washing her hands.
Not so good at times. Too much washing dries her hands especially behind the wrist and eczema starts flaring thereafter
37 months, still a long way to go before I can trust her to manage herself, but I'm not complaining, just loving every moment of it.
